Improve Your Writing By Breaking These Two Rules
I used to be a mediocre writer… well really, I used to be bad, but I want to call it mediocre.
Only when I started breaking these TWO rules, did my writing improve dramatically.
If you want to become a writing wizard, then this article might be the most important one you read all year.
Let’s get right to it.
How To Become A Writing Wizard
The first rule I had to break was ingrained in me from middle school. They said:
You need to use big words in your writing to show how smart you are.
And this haunted me.
So, when I started marketing, I wrote things like:
“We empower cutting edge technology that revolutionizes and streamlines your productivity, optimizes your schedule, and enhances your…”
Until I discovered that really…
That just confuses the reader and it doesn’t make you sound smart at all.
It just makes people give up on your writing.
So, instead you can just say:
“Save at least 4 hours every week, by using this tool.”
Now, if you were my English teacher or ChatGPT, you wouldn’t like this.
But when your customer sees simple, understandable writing, it makes a massive difference.
The second rule that I broke, helped me save thousands of dollars in ad cost.
Let me tell you how.
Writing That Actually Gets Results
I see business owners follow this rule all the time and it’s:
Make sure you give the customer lots of options, so they have to buy SOMETHING.
We are used to seeing this in TV commercials for supermarkets.
They show toys and bananas and laptops… ALL in the span of 10 seconds.
But imagine you got an email from a coworker and they said:
“Let me know if you like this idea and what your thoughts are and when it would suit you to have a phone call about this or if you want more information…”
It would be quite hard to answer.
That’s why your message needs to have ONE goal.
With ads, the goal is to get a response.
The goal of a sales call – close the sale.
And after you have a happy customer you should get a referral.
Everything becomes so easy when you write with one simple goal in mind.
